Slag — what’s left over when iron is smelted — usually just gets thrown away. There’s a good deal of it on the hill behind my studio.

I coated a piece in white ottchil. Under the lacquer the surface hardens and the shape comes forward, the way a scent comes forward with no shape at all. Stand a stick of incense in it, or just let it sit there on its own.
